I'm only mildly surprised. And I have no reason to object to it.

Would you mind sharing your source so I can read and learn?

Please and thank you.

Not anonlinuxuser's source, but the official list of certified
UNIX systems is at:

https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/

If you were mildly surprised about macOS being certified, perhaps
you will be even more surprised that the Huawei EulerOS system
listed there is a Linux system.

Thank you for the link Geoff.

I was aware that at least one Linux distribution had gotten certified
and purchased the right to call themselves Unix™. I didn't recall which
one.

I think you'd have to go to where ever the UNIX organization is. It is
they that certified Apple as UNIX.
I had purchased the book "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment"
by Stevens & Rago. In there they have the charts for Apple. Pretty
much BSD.

No. They are considered to be a UNIX OS, not merely UNIX like.
What FOOLy compatible element to you dispute?

And being here since '77, they are likely one of the oldest
survivors too.

Of course that was the original and it is not around any more.
So, the 'survival' I mention is that of OpenBSD.

But sure... "UNIX" still exists and is "owned" by Open Group.
There are others that lay claim too. Some have paid "the Open Group
license" and others have not.

But is it really "philosophy" ?

I use the phrases "Unix" to refer to the OSs that have the legal ability
to call themselves Unix™, as in they have paid the Open Group.

I use the phrase "Unix like" to be an OS that walks like a Unix™ duck,
quacks like a Unix™ duck, but has not necessarily paid to be called a duck.

Said another way, I consider "Unix like" to be a super set of "Unix".

All Linux distributions are Unix like. Not all Linux distributions are
Unix.

> And being here since '77, they are likely one of the oldest survivors

I absolutely agree that NetBSD / OpenBSD / FreeBSD are probably the
closest to the original Unix of the free and open source Unix like
operating systems. But I'm not aware of NetBSD / OpenBSD / FreeBSD
having the legal ability to use the Unix name in it's proper form.

IMHO, that lack of legal claim to the name does not make them any less
of a Unix to me.

I think there is definitely a Unix philosophy. But that's independent
of the ability to have legal claim to the Unix name or not.

I can't recite 40-50 years of intellectual property sales / acquisition.
But I do recognize the name OpenGroup after Geoff mentioned it.

The Open Group started life as X/Open, a consortium formed in
the mid 1980's by AT&T, Sun, HP, DEC, IBM, etc. to develop a
specification (the "X/Open Portability Guide", XPG) that they would
then all agree conform to, and a test suite to check conformance.
Since AT&T owned the UNIX trademark, conforming systems were given
a different trademark (a stylised "X") to use.

At some point X/Open merged with OSF to form The Open Group.

In the early-to-mid 1990's Novell (who had bought UNIX System Labs
from AT&T, the UNIX trademark going with it) gave the trademark to
The Open Group so that the systems they certify could then be called
UNIX. The subsequent revision to the XPG was then renamed "The Single
UNIX Specification, Version 1" (SUSv1). The current standard is SUSv4.

I would typically say things like Solaris, AIX, and HP UX are UNIX.

[Free|Net|Open]BSD are Unix or unix.

Linux is a work-alike, but it's really its own thing. I've been told
that the Linux kernel is like the kernel of TOPS-20. It's definitely not
a unix kernel.

What is the difference? BSD is less Unix then Linux for sure...

The words are a bit difficult for me. Do you mean that Linux is written
from begining to end as an operating system that behaves like Unix, but,
has it's own kernel and utilities, userland?
