Reminds me of PDP8 days. We were doing fft's by the million. All done in 12-bit integer arithmetic with a block exponent. Lookup tables for logs were simple enough, as were trig functions. Not that anything was exactly "fast" -- IIRC a 1.2usec basic instruction cycle. The machine did have a FP unit, but it was too s..l..o..w.. by far for this.
