Which version of Firefox do you have? Mine is 3.6.16 for Ubuntu. In the
Preferences > Privacy screen, there is a choice: "Remember history", 
"Never remember history", or "Use custom settings for history". The 
checkboxes only appear if you select "Use custom settings".
