Are you using a valid 'hash-bang' line to specify the executing shell or program? as in #!/bin/bash as the first line. Otherwise it will very likely revert to the 'sh' shell which uses different syntax to 'bash' or 'csh' or 'zsh'. Are you using the correct manual? What are you trying to do?
