You're right, I didn't imagine my tiny wink about "the shell" would have 
triggered the third secession war but now as you chose a real good topic
I'd only say that Emacs used to be good, I used it circa 1982 or 3 on a
pretty amber VTsomething using an APL keyboard and it was nice to have an
editor that helped to lessen the burden, though it was quite nice too to
have a terminal with programmable keys that helped to lessen the burden
about meta-meta-combinations ;-)

But since then Emacs turned on to a huge Simon game trying to puff itself
as an OS just like Vim tries its best to paint by numbers while you just
hope to type some code quietly, so in short, there's nothing that comes
close to STeVie or ElVis...
