I have no idea about the pay scale but at least in one case I don't think the human could operate as a checkout clerk. I think the store had a policy of hiring the challenged as baggers and making sure nobody is sneaking steaks out is within their abilities. I do not mean that negatively. Providing work for those who can function somewhat independently is a benefit and a step up from sheltered workshops. Speaking from experience it isn't all roses for the employer. It can be like herding needy cats.
