That one claims 'cay' came from the indigenous word for small island that 
the Spanish adapted to cayo.  The Florida keys are spelled and pronounced 
key. It's even odd if a US speaker would say 'key' or 'kay'.  Someone from 
Florida may be more likely to say 'key'. Out of context most of the rest 
of the US might not even know what a cay is.
