There was a volunteer fair yesterday and I followed up on one of the options at the country animal services. First I took a dog for a walk. I've no idea what breed he is, but he is cat-sized and old. I think he liked getting out and sniffing the ground squirrel burrows in the adjacent field. He may be their training model. They also have cats and I spent some time with them. They seemed to enjoy getting out of their cages and wandering around the small room. The shelter provides treats and toys, plus handling the vet bills. An old cat showed up a couple of years ago with extensive fur matting (Persian) and arthritis. At the first snowfall she decided indoor life wasn't bad. She shed but was too decrepit to jump up on anything.
