I've wondered about that. As I said, we taped the tube to a broomstick and 
approached delicately. The apparatus in question was basically a 15 KW 
Hartley oscillator with the material placed between the plates of the 
capacitor. If the cavity was leaking you had DIY diathermy. 

Probably not good for you but that was the era when people sighted down 
waveguides to line them up.
