Asbestos can be a problem. https://www.intermountainhistories.org/items/show/382 That's a bit different than the usual panic. The whole town was rolling around in the stuff. https://merrywidowhealthmine.com/ Radon is good for you! There are several old mines in that area that are advertised as health spas. The radon panic kicked off a few years before I left New Hampshire. The state's nickname is 'The Granite State' so the sheep were ripe for shearing. The whole damn state has 'elevated' levels of radon. Ah, DDT. When I was a kid we would go to the outdoor movies in the summer. This was before A/C was available in cars so the windows were cranked (manually) down. Upstate NY sits on the Canadian Shield, with poor drainage forming many lakes and bogs -- prime mosquito habitat. We were damn glad when the truck drove up and down the aisles laying down a cloud of DDT before the movie started. Still alive after all these years. DDT does have a drawback. By suppressing malaria and other diseases it allows unchecked population growth in area that really don't need any more hungry mouths.
