Both of my parents lived through the epidemic. I often thought about that during the covid period, which is still used by many as a historical marker in their lives. Neither of my parents talked about the flu epidemic; it didn't appear to be a memorable event for them. My mother's brother died from diphtheria, probably around 1910 before the vaccine was developed. He had eaten a banana, which was a fairly exotic fruit at the time, before becoming symptomatic and it took my mother some time to break the association between bananas and death.
