It's not full proof but I had one ballot returned because my scrawl wasn't sufficiently close to my signature on record. One concern has been personnel in nursing homes or similar places scooping up the ballots of the senile and filling them out. The signature check may or may not pick them up. I doubt the election office does forensic analysis of each.
