My father was the ideal case. He was going to retire when I graduated college in June; he had a heart attack in January. I only fully retired last year. It's an actuarial game but the benefits increase up until 70 if you don't file. I filed at 70 and then had the interesting position of still paying the tax from my paycheck, while also receiving the monthly benefit.
