I think my paternal grandmother's people may have left Europe because of 
Bismarck's Kulturkampf. That's just a guess based on the dates on old 
grave markers.

Germany still is about 2/3 Protestant in the north, and 1/3 Catholic in 
the south among the ones that are at all religious. Somewhere in Goebbel's 
diaries iirc he mentions the Protestants tended to be SA, the Catholics 
SS.
