To further muddy the water when I was a kid we used friction tape for wire 
splices and many other things.

That matches my memories that Scotch 33 wasn't commonly used until the 
'60s.

Like it says for large motors and transformers we used ring tongue crimped 
on connectors screwed together by short 8-32 screws and nuts, wrapped with 
rubber tape to make a nice, smooth ball, and then a layer of PVC for 
abrasion resistance. PVC alone doesn't conform too well to that sort of 
splice.
