Several local areas have had commercial thinning and there are others that are marked out for a sale. They aren't plantations but areas that have naturally reseeded too densely. Since it's mostly for pulp twin crowns and other odd trees get cut. The sales aren't that popular since the contracts include taking out the understory and not tearing up the area. The real goal is reducing the fire hazard. Trump was criticized for his remark about 'raking the forests' but it's essentially raking the forests. When I was with the Forest Service there was a young German guy on some sort of exchange program. He was appalled. In Germany a forester is responsible for a very small tract by US standards and just about knows every tree by name. In the US the foresters often work from aerial photos and never set a boot on the ground.
