The parking brakes on a truck are spring brakes that are applied when there is no pressure. The service brakes are normally released and require air pressure to apply. A mile of cars each with their own air supply and the signal supply complicate things. Then there are the mechanical handbrakes. I don't know when, if ever they get used. Maybe when they're humping cars?
