There are easier places mine for resources. While I understand the national pride it is sort of a white elephant for Denmark. However when you've lost territory for the last 500 years you hang onto what's left. I think it is in one of Ernest Gann's books where he talks about the transport pilots in WWII. Without GPS all the fjords look about the same and if you picked the wrong one you were royally screwed. The US sort of annexed Greenland during WWII when Denmark was occupied. Apparently the Greenlanders preferred that option to Canada or the UK. The cryolite mine was a point of interest at that time but that's been shut down.
