They prefer nice, yummy slow elk. The cats sometimes come into town looking for nice, fat urban deer but not the wolves. https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/rick-bass/the-ninemile-wolves/ I was working at the Ninemile Ranger Station in '89 and '90 when the wolves showed up. The theory was they had wandered in from Alberta, avoiding ICE. The last interaction with humans that I recall involved two hunters who had shot an elk and were too lazy to pack it out, figuring they would return the next day. When they did they found a pack had claimed the kill. The two assholes exited stage left but were not pursued. > Wolves are not Nice Doggies ... they're food-finding organized GANGS. They stabilize the deer and elk populations. There is an interesting dynamic. Elk, in particular, bring out of state hunters and their money. otoh, they also eat hay meant for the cows. Too many elk and the ranchers bitch. Too few elk and the hunters bitch, blaming the wolves and cats for eating 'their elk'. Truth is a lot of them suck at hunting. The only time they set foot in the woods is during hunting season and don't know shit about where the elk hang out. > And eastern DEER ... now very dangerous pests. Save your state - > shoot Bambi Back in the '50s and '60s the NYS Conservation Dept. published a magazine 'The Conservationist'. Every fall they would beg people to get off their fat asses and shoot the damn deer. Even worse, every winter the local rag would run a story about the deer yarded up in deep snow and starving. Well meaning people would organize a hay air lift. Next year, more damn deer.
