Distros include Arch, Debian, and Gentoo. Other projects include FFmpeg, LibreOffice, OpenSSL, and PostgreSQL. (And those are just the highlights!) You can donate to SPI in general or designate your funds for a specific project from their list. They have a physical address in New York City to which you can mail donations or you can pay on-line in a number of different ways. Your choice. It seems like SPI already does what you're suggesting.
