Verizon was CDMA. I didn't have a problem with Verizon when traveling, including California. I think AT&T was stronger in the Pacific Northest and the east. In this case progress was useful. I bought a new phone at BestBuy last month. Take it home, swap in the SIM, transfer my stuff, and I was good to go.
