Barbiturates were handed out like candy mints, prescribed by legitimate MDs, and filled by your local friendly pharmacist. All legal and above board. Nembutal (yellows) and Seconal (reds) were the most common. The benzodiazepines like Valium were supposed to be less addictive and dangerous than the barbiturates like heroin was supposed to be the kinder, gentler morphine. SSRIs are the popular feel good drugs today. Side effects may include suicide and hypomania. One could ask what is it about modern society that causes a large proportion of the people to be medicated. My self-medication drug of choice is caffeine but I've always preferred uppers to downers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm51ihfi1p4 "I wanna be sedated Nothin' to do, nowhere to go-ho I wanna be sedated"
