Most of the portables have a low oxygen shutdown. 

The left loons started a campaign against gas ranges, all that pollution

Answer me this. Yesterday I made pulled pork in a dutch oven in the oven, 
about 5 hours at 300 degrees. Exactly how is that different from using the 
oven as a space heater?

They may have a point. There have been quite a few apartment fires in NYC 
that resulted from stoves. Orthodox Jews can't start a fire on the 
sabbath, but nothing says they can't turn the burners on before the 
sabbath.
