When McGregor and Boorman got to eastern Russia in 'Long Way Round' it 
became very interesting. They elected to load everything on a train to 
cross Siberia and at one point the Russian Army took pity on them and 
loaded the bikes on a truck for a river ford. 

In hindsight it would have been wiser to let the Germans push the Soviets 
east of the Urals and let them bang around in Asia where they could do 
little harm.
