The problem is they are not maintained in the winter. People take the 'shortcut', hit a section of unplowed road, and continue on, thinking it will get better. It doesn't, they get hopelessly stuck, find there is no cell coverage, and if they're really unlucky, die. Following a GPS requires a little common sense. > But you can see in the map that the east of the island has many roads, > and the west doesn't. Also, all gas stations were closed on the west > side going back to the hotel. I wasn't sure I could get back. Self service gas stations have been a vast improvement. I've slept in the car more than once waiting for the gas station to reopen in the morning. I put an aftermarket tank on the DR650 instead of the stock 3.4 gallon. There are back roads between here and Idaho where you pass the point of no return with the stock tank and have to continue into Idaho to find gas. Many out of state bike riders aren't ready for infrequent gas stations and spotty cell phone coverage.
