I worked my way through the Wizard book (Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs) one winter. It uses Scheme as a didactic language, something only a computer scientist could love. The concepts were interesting but I kept asking myself 'Why would anyone ever do it this way?' When I was in college I think Dartmouth was one of the few, if not the only, university with a computer science program. We learned programming in FORTRAN IV and the course was sort of a stepchild of the math department.
