It isn't a spit as you're picturing it although it might have been in the very distant past. It's an archipelago with an underlying coral reef. When I was driving down it there was a waterspout off to the east with powerboats headed toward it, presumably to take photos. Personally I was uncomfortable stuck on what amounts to a very long bridge with very few options. The best part of Key West is Hemingway's with the polydactyl cats. Otherwise it is a tourist trap and Florida's answer to Fire Island or Provincetown. I don't know why gays are attracted to ocean front property at the end of the road.
