Except for non-native species that were planted about the only 'hardwood' in this area is cottonwood which is hardly worth burning. Therefore most of the firewood is pine or Douglas fir unless you get lucky and find a western larch, which is a little better. Even better the city sits in a valley prone to temperature inversions so wood stoves are banned. We still get our share during the wildfire season which is just wrapping up. On bad days you can hardly see across the street and everything smells like a campfire. It is better back east where there is a selection of oak, ash, maple, beech, and other hardwoods available.
