The C64 used a 6510, an improved version of the 6502. I think the drive used the original 6502. The PET used the 6502 as did the VIC-20, Apple II, and a lot of other computers. There was nothing wrong with the chip. Motorola probably had regrets about screwing up the 6800 release so badly.
