I think the first wind farm I saw was Altamont Pass unless there is another one as you head east from Oakland. The sun was just breaking over the hills as the turbines started to spin. It definitely was not San Gorgonio or Tehacahpi although I saw those in later years. The solar thermal plant near Kramer Junction on 395 was another landmark. I think that one solved the sundown problem by switching to natural gas. Supposedly the heliostats were also good for instant fried chicken or whatever flew by. I haven't been in CA since my brother died and have missed the newer eyesores.
