Much of his work was done at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama. My brother also worked there on the solid fuel version of the BOMARC missile and my mother and I visited him in '58. Huntsville and all of Alabama was completely segregated. There were colored rest rooms, colored drinking fountains, and other separate and unequal facilities. Unless they were domestic help shopping for a white family they had their own stores. The ghetto, known locally as Niggertown, was a must see for visitors. Political campaign speeches were mostly about keeping the blacks where they belonged. Conveniently, while a Jew could pass as white in Germany, black is black. In the north we were much more subtle.
