Never heard of him.  British TV series had about 0% penetration in the US 
market when I was a kid. PBS probably got a steep discount on Brit sitcoms 
like 'Fawlty Towers' and flogs them regularly. 

Perhaps it's something you have to be exposed to when you're young but 
I've never gotten most British humour except for Pratchett.
