In one of those moments where time slows down I noted the deer was riding on the hood for a bit. I stopped and he left the scene of the accident. In this state if you kill the deer you can take it with you -- the whole deer. No butchering it by the side of the road and leaving a gut pile to attract bears, coyotes, and so forth. One should make sure the deer is really dead and not just stunned before loading it into the hatchback.
