When I paid with US money she said 'you're an American' in French like it explained everything. That phrase I could decipher. There were some Canadiens in my extended family. They would switch to French when they didn't want the kids to know what was going on. Some of the kids could speak French; that was a ball when they hit the high school French class. Quebec French got a divorce from Parisian French about 300 years ago. I had the same problem with the German I picked up from family members.
