When I VPN'd in Tuesday to patch my work machine the first step is to fire up Microsoft Authenticator on the phone, get the 6 digit magic number, and hope I can log in before the magic expires and it rolls to a new number. The app is strictly for phones not desktops since having the phone in your possession is the second factor. The current IT head is a Microsoft alumni so it figures.
