The tobacco producing colonies were profitable and were the reason slaves were introduced. However they weren't the whole story. The New England colonies were founded by malcontents from the UK. Britain inherited New Netherland, New Sweden, New France, and parts of Spanish colonies mostly through treaties after European wars. It's not like they had one big homogeneous colony in North America. They did manage to hold onto the Canadian part of New France after kicking a lot of the French out. Quebec was an oversight they probably regretted. It's somewhat surprising the 13 colonies hung together at all. They didn't necessarily like each other but liked Britain less. Many people mistakenly believe Vermont was one of the original 13. It became the 14th state in 1791 and sort of had a private war going with New York as well as Britain during the Revolution.
