No wonder Scandinavians gravitated to Minnesota; just like home! Why the Somalis went there beats me. An advantage of a semi-arid climate is the mosquitoes flourish for a couple of weeks, and some years not at all. I think I saw three this summer and only one tick. Every spring I spray my hiking clothes down with Permethrin, It doesn't repel ticks but scrambles their nervous system. I've seen ticks make it half way up my leg before running out of steam. For actual repellent it's DEET all the way. The hell with eco-friendly patchouli flavored organic tea tree oil or whatever.
