The thing to remember about the US zepplin attempts is they were based on the design of a captured German zepplin "Height Climber". There were designed to operate at 20,000', higher than the aircraft of the day, to bomb Britain. They sacrificed strength to cut weight. In the film 'Hells Angels', there is a scene where after ditching everything to gain altitude the crew lines up and dutifully jumps. The US did some improvements but gave up eventually. iirc only one survived.
