Carter got handed a bag when Nixon's wage and price controls started to unravel and inflation was out of control. Paul Volcker became chairman of the Fed and did what had to be done. The last thing Reagan wanted was a huge recession but he reappointed Volcker when it became clear his policies were working. We could use a Volcker right about now.
