Nietzsche wrote at length bemoaning that problem. Still, there is 
surviving and prospering; those with the might, mostly financial these 
days rather than physical or mental prowess, prosper. Lawrence has the odd 
belief that the US ever did more than pay lip service to all those Lockean 
ideals.
