Chernobyl was both designed and operated by idiots. It was a perfect storm that led to that disaster. The Russians made amendments to the RBMK reactor after that, to prevent similar things from happening again. Solar has the problem that it can't generate any energy when the sun is down. Living as far north as I do, the sun is below the horizon most of the time in winter. (But up most of the time in summer.)
