Av. to disrupt global oil trade? *What the EU can — and can’t — learn from Spain’s low energy bills* Madrid says a renewables boom is shielding its citizens from soaring fossil fuel costs. But that’s not the full story. The continent’s power bills have skyrocketed since Iran blocked the flow of oil and gas through the Strait of Hormuz and bombed fuel production sites across the Middle East in response to air strikes from the U.S. and Israel. At a Thursday European Council summit in Brussels, many EU leaders warned of significant pain for households and industry if the crisis doesn’t end soon. But Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was quick to note his country had been largely spared from the price hikes. “Spain is showing how the energy transition and our commitment to renewables is ensuring our citizens, industry, businesses, workers and homes are less impacted than others,” he said. Renewables currently generate nearly 60 percent of Spain’s power. Sánchez went on to portray Spain as a model for other countries. “Last Saturday, the price per megawatt-hour of electricity in Spain was €14, while in Italy, Germany and France, consumers were paying over €100,” he noted. “That difference in price was not the result of random luck, but rather because this government has spent the last eight years working to be at the forefront of renewable energy deployment.” ... But Spain’s disproportionately sunny skies and strong winds result in consistent renewable generation: Gas is only needed to cover demand during 15 percent of an average day in Spain, compared to nearly 90 percent in Italy. -- Cheers, Carlos.
