Detecting a read of a sparse file, one can just print blocks of nulls
rather than reading, reversing, and then printing blocks of nulls.

$ perl-5.24.3 -le '$a = "yes"; print reverse $a; print scalar reverse $a'
yes
sey

I see a difference using scalar.
