  As far as I know, before the ISO standard showed up in the 80s,
  no culture actually used horizontal dashes in dates as the usual
  thing. I think the dashes were picked back then exactly to avoid
  conflicts with other common styles. So today you should only use
  horizontal dashes as separators if you're actually sticking to
  the ISO format. If you don't want that, then just use the format
  that makes sense in your own culture without the dashes. But
  mixing horizontal dashes with non-ISO formats is just a mess.
