I also had Windows in mind. In my opinion Linux distributions should
handle it the same way - just update without bugging the user other than
if there is an update which might not be wanted.

On a Debian (Mint actually) machine the /etc/cron.daily I have a script

export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive
aptitude update >> /var/log/apt-safe-upgrade
aptitude safe-upgrade -o Aptitude::Delete-Unused=false --assume-yes >>
/var/log/apt-safe-upgrade

running smoothly since years now.
