This is exactly my point. As you pointed out, there are plenty of options, but for a new linux to happen this strange alchemy of technology _and_ person _and_ timing need to happen I think, and that is very difficult to consciously engineer. I think the closest to Linus we have is Theos influence in the OpenBSD project. I really would like to see a different file system in OpenBSD, otherwise it does seem like a nice candidate. FreeBSD does receive (or did at least) some suppor from Netflix and Netapp I think, but I don't know if that is still happening.
