Absolutely.

You can also run it from compressed air, and exhaust the gases outside 
(at pressure); but I don't know if that was ever done, except as a test.

I know that the Spanish subs from the S80 series do something of the 
sort, as a temporary hack till the AIP gets finished and installed.
