I disagree. Yes, the world now is horrible, but we've never been more free 
or had it better in the entire history of man.

Sometimes you're so depressing! I thought I was supposed to be the 
misanthrope! ;)

That being said however, it is definitely not a smooth upward curve of 
progress. The curve is very erratic, although I am a firm believer in a 
long term positive trend.
