Yeah, I've taken to doing this as well; even the more sensible distros inevitably have a "desktop" meta-package that drags in just *piles* of stuff I'll never use, half of which are just the the $FLAVOR house- brand versions of the same things. Wish they'd separate out just a "core X" package that'd save you the trouble the way the BSDs do.
