To be precise, Microsoft XENIX was actually SCO XENIX, for which
Microsoft had a license from SCO [*] to port it to the Intel i8086
processor. Microsoft never owned the full rights to XENIX. ;)
[*] The real Santa Cruz Operations, not The SCO Group, which is actually
the rebranded Caldera Systems that bought SCO, then rebranded
itself, and then began a by now notoriously protracted legal battle
against Novell and IBM, and earlier also against RedHat — a legal
battle in which Caldera Systems was sponsored by Microsoft on at
least three occasions by way of sock puppet companies, such as the
law firm of Bill Gates' father.
During this litigation, it was ruled in court that the AT&T Unix
copyrights and patents were the intellectual property of Novell,
which had legally acquired them from AT&T, and that the UNIX™
trademark had been donated to The Open Group by the original Santa
Cruz operations.
The litigation against IBM was based upon the proven-false
allegation that IBM would have inserted proprietary AT&T Unix code —
wrongfully expected by Caldera to have become their intellectual
property when they acquired the real SCO — into the Linux kernel.
